Adsorptive Separation of Phenol from Aqueous Solution Using Nano Zero-valent Iron Impregnated Cashew Nut Shell

This paper investigates the potential of nano zero valent iron impregnated cashew nut shell nanoparticles (NZVI-CNS) as an effective adsorbent for the removal of phenol from aqueous solution. The effect of initial pH, adsorbent dosage, contact time and temperature were determined by batch adsorption experiments. Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherm models were applied to the adsorption equilibrium data to predict the adsorption efficiency of the NZVI-CNS. The maximum adsorption was occurred at the pH value of 5. The NZVI-CNS exhibits high efficiency for phenol removal and the equilibrium was achieved in 30 min. The Pseudo-second order kinetic model was found to best represent the adsorption kinetic data. The synthesized NZVI-CNS was characterized by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), and Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM). Finally, it was concluded that the NZVI-CNS can be used as a promising nanosorbent for the removal of phenol from wastewater.
